The Camden House History of German Literature Volume 8 The Camden House History of German Literature Volume 8 The Literature of German Romanticism Mahoney is Professor of German and Director of the European Studies Program at the University of Vermont. Helfer, Kristina Muxfeldt, Beate Allert, Paul Bishop and R. Contributors: Gerhard Schulz, Arnd Bohm, Richard Littlejohns, Gerhart Hoffmeister, Ulrich Scheck, Claudia Stockinger, Bernadette Malinowski, Fabian Lampart, Klaus Peter, Gabriele Rommel, Martha B. A final group of essays focuses on German literary Romanticism's relation to other aspects of German culture: folklore studies, politics, psychology, natural science, gender presentation and representation, music, and visual art. The second section is organized according to the traditional distinctions between epic, dramatic, and lyric modes of writing, while realizing that particularly in the Romantic novel, there was an attempt to blend these three. Goethe and Schiller are considered, as are the Jena Romantics. The introduction and first section establish an overall framework by placing German Romanticism within a European context that includes its English counterpart. This volume of sharply focused essays by an international team of scholars deals not only with the most significant literary, philosophical, and cultural aspects of German Romanticism - one of the most influential, albeit highly controversial movements in the history of German literature - but also with the history and status of scholarship on the literature of the period. The English translation by Justin O'Brien was first published in 1955. The essay was published in French in 1942. He claims that both a banal event and something as intense as a German invasion will prompt someone to ask "why?". While the essay rarely refers to this event, Robert Zaretsky argues that the event prompted his ideas of the absurd. The work can be seen in relation to other absurdist works by Camus: the novel The Stranger (1942), the plays The Misunderstanding (1942) and Caligula (1944), and especially the essay The Rebel (1951).Ĭamus began the work in 1940, during the fall of France, when millions of refugees fled from advancing German armies. The essay concludes, "The struggle itself. In the final chapter, Camus compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. Camus claims that the realization of the absurd does not justify suicide, and instead requires "revolt." He then outlines several approaches to the absurd life. The absurd lies in the juxtaposition between the fundamental human need to attribute meaning to life and the "unreasonable silence" of the universe in response. Influenced by philosophers such as Søren Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Friedrich Nietzsche, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd. The Myth of Sisyphus (French: Le mythe de Sisyphe) is a 1942 philosophical essay by Albert Camus. He makes a few questionable decisions on his journey but all of which you can understand and back him in. The Terminal List combines a shot of Vince Flynn's Term Limits with a dash of Stephen Hunter's Point of Impact, tosses in a sprinkle of the movie The Fugitive, and mixes it all together with the visceral vengeance of David Morell's First Blood. But his internal dialogue and his passion really make you root for him throughout the book. James Reece himself isn’t an overtly outgoing character and doesn’t quite instil a vast amount of confidence in me of his personality. For more on this author and his debut novel. When a string of horrific terrorist attacks plagues the Western world during the holiday season, the broader markets fall into a. Growing up, Jack Carr wanted to do two things with his life: 1) Become a SEAL 2) Write a book. There are a couple of moments in the book that Carr is very brave to include and I salute him (no pun intended) for including them in the debut novel rather than saving them for sequels. In 1 New York Times author Jack Carr’s follow-up to The Terminal List, former Navy SEAL James Reece’s skill, cunning, and heroism put the US government back in his debt and set him on another path of revenge. It’s fast-paced, high-intensity and utterly raw at times. I feel like Jack Carr had jotted down some great plot moments and decided to throw many of them into this first book. I don’t think I remember a point in this book where I wasn’t utterly fascinated by what was going on. The plot of The Terminal List sees the main character, James Reece, with nothing left to live for after he finds out the American government are responsible for the death of his whole team sending him on a pursuit to find out the truth, along the way taking some hard blows and finding out some dark secrets that really grab you throughout. Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who led special operations teams as a Team Leader, Platoon Commander, Troop Commander and Task Unit Commander and in 2018 he wrote his first fictional book about a character called James Reece who experiences the dark side of the government and becomes an enemy of the state. Based on the best-selling novel by former Navy SEAL Jack Carr (who’s also an executive producer), the Amazon Studios original series The Terminal List follows James Reece ( Chris Pratt ), as he. A Navy SEAL has nothing left to live for and everything to kill for after he discovers that the American government is behind the deaths of his team in this. The Terminal List, adapted from the first of Jack Carrs five 'James Reece' books, is an earnest but overlong revenge thriller featuring Chris Pratt in humorless Heartland hero mode, for. I also find Apple drive more useful these days. Part of it is that I am an avid Google Drive user, and most people I work with are on there or they like Dropbox, which has never been a place for me either. I learnt a lot about how I really work trying to get Evernote to be part of my workflow. It is a well thought out product that links to everything from Blogo to Airstory to CoSchedule. I Watched Doto tech videos about how Evernote works. Evernote DownfallsĪll along I wanted Evernote to work for me, but it did not. The other component is the note section, where there is a place to take notes in meetings and drop blog ideas.Īll of these things, you can do in the apps I mentioned above, but the brutal simplicity of NotePlan has gotten me further. You can copy all the unfinished tasks from one day to the next. I even leave notes on days that say things like, “Remember you thought to do this today when you were sitting in the Garage Cafe.” I add my primary focus for the day and when I am drifting(which I do on an hourly basis). So my whole focus is on this little square on my mobile device, or Mac, and when people ask me things, I would add it here. NotePlan shows your calendar and has a space for notes underneath it. Yet another significant discovery through the Settapp thing. I was still missing something on my phone to help me through the day, and that something came along in the form of NotePlan. We might think the primary use of a Trello board is working a sequence with a team.īut hands down, the main reason to commit to a project tool, is so that you can send teammates and clients there to find links to everything, rather than fucking around with email. While the ideal workflow never materialized for me, it got close with the epic Trello, MailChimp, and Publicate workflow. It’s amazing how much I learned about what I needed in my work flow after playing with so many apps and gadgets in Trello. Nils and I wrote a lot of Trello ‘how-to’ posts here, but Trello started to get messy with all the things you could plug into it. So, I viciously overcompensate by overthinking and overworking an angle so being able to sort, shift, list, map, and everything else with Zenkit saves me hours. I am not sure if it is a dyslexic thing or not, but I spend a lot of energy worried that I will miss something or have a blind spot on a project. Is There A Zap For Dyslexia?īeing able to shift views in Zenkit is like being able to mould and understand the edges of a project, it has given me a significantly better understanding of what and where I am on my editorial calendar. Most of my sites are on Rainmaker Platform which is WP with a hundred magic things, but not Jetpack. (Automattic released a WP plugin for Google Docs, but it only works if you have the WP Jetpack. (Am I the only person who can’t format correctly in WordPress?!) This neat little tool searches my Google Docs and then in one beautiful and immediate click it exports my fully formatted post with the title and headers intact as a draft post to my website. I have a Zap set in Zapier so when I add a new blog post to Zenkit, it starts the blog post in Google Docs, and then I send that post to the right WordPress (WP) site via an app called ‘Wordable’. This way, I can write a blog post on a mind map and then export it with 80% of the layout work done, including Header 1, 2 and three sections, which are set by the levels of the mind map. I can rapid fire idea in MM mind map in a way that I can’t in Zenkit.Īlso, adding information to a map cell is easier in MM, and I can print off or export the whole map into a document. There are some things it does not do as well as Mind Meister (MM), but I am super picky about mind mapping. Think of it like a cocktail of Trello, Google Sheets, Wunderlist, Mind Meister, in one app. I checked Eric and Zenkit out, and the way that Zenkit produced in four different ways, had me at hello. I am going to give this a ten-year limit I have been playing with gadgets for years so we could be here all day.Īround 2009 I was early to Evernote, Trello, Google Docs, Google Keep, Mind Meister, Meister Task, Dropbox, GQueues and Nimble CRM and in 2017 when Eric from Zenkit hit me up on Twitter I rolled my eyes at yet another todo app based Kanban board.Ī lot of well-intentioned people used to hit me up on twitter about their ‘Trello killer’ Kanban app, these days they hit me up about Coworking Space management software. (You can get the desktop version of NotePlan as part of Settapp with access to over 50 other Mac Apps, no ads or in-app purchases.) How does this work? I have tried so many combinations of apps, and the one that has worked the best is using Zenkit for project planning and NotePlan for daily to-dos and calendar. Productivity Flow with Zenkit and NotePlan The boy, who was 4 years old, had been wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a large JCPenney bassinet box. 25, 1957, in a wooded area of Philadelphia’s Fox Chase neighborhood. But they cautioned the passage of time complicates the task. The homicide investigation remains open, and authorities said they hoped publicizing Joseph’s name would spur a fresh round of leads. “When people think about the boy in the box, a profound sadness is felt, not just because a child was murdered, but because his entire identity and his rightful claim to own his existence was taken away,” she said. I was never phenomenal at GW, so I don't know if I'm the best measuring stick.but I think it's really effing hard. It’s been over six years since Geometry Wars has graced our game consoles, which is why I was genuinely excited when news of its return spread through the gaming community like wildfire. The gameplay is the same as ever, but to progress in the story mode you need to get two or three stars on most stages, and some of the scores you have to reach for that are just insane. I'm not going to get very far in story mode because of that, so it's kind of a let down. Again, though, I'm not great at the game. How long is the campaign (with bosses, etc.)? Someone else might get 20 million points on every level the first try, while I can barely manage 800,000 most of the time. It seems pretty long.there are at least forty or fifty levels.? That's just a stab in the dark, and again, if GW is a cakewalk for you that may not seem like much. I've gotten to the third boss stage, but I have to seven or eight more stars before I can play him.īeating the levels is not too hard (just getting one star), but you have to unlock the bosses by earning additional stars. That means replaying earlier levels a LOT to chase the additional stars. Is there any sort of progression, such as upgrading your drone, like in the DS game? Does it carry over from one run to the next? There's some good variety in the stages, but Christ Almighty I don't care enough to play a level 40 times just to come 5 million points short of progressing over and over again.then to do it again seven more times before I can even play the boss? Ugh. Yes, and this is another one of my beefs with it. You have to earn stars to upgrade your supers, which is frustrating for me because I'm not very good and I want to try different supers to see if they suit my play style better. #GEOMETRY WARS 3 DIMENSIONS GAMEPLAY PS4 UPGRADE# You get a new drone for each boss you beat, but you earn points for upgrades from playing levels. Which mode is the best (in your opinion)? It would be nice if you could somehow earn supers or drones through the other modes, too, but that is not the case. I've mostly played adventure because I wanted to chase the upgrade-dragon. Each stage is a different type, so there's a pretty good variety. So far I've only managed three stars on the very first stage. Last but not least: Is it worth the $15 price tag or should I wait for a sale? It's still fun, but I wish they had ramped the difficulty a little slower so I could test some more supers / drones before I hit a wall. Haven't played MP so I skipped that question. I would wait for a sale unless you're a GW superfan. If you just want a quick fix, this may not be worth the money for your frustration.Decemin PS4 tagged arcade / geometry wars 3 / shapes in your face / twin stick by Richie If you can chase a high score for hours on end, go for it. #GEOMETRY WARS 3 DIMENSIONS GAMEPLAY PS4 PS4# While the twin-stick shooter genre obviously owes a massive debt to the ’80s classics Robotron and Smash TV, the genre’s massive resurgence in the last decade or so is thanks to the Geometry Wars titles. The series started as a mini-game in the Project Gotham Racing 2 but hit mainstream popularity with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on Xbox Live Arcade. #GEOMETRY WARS 3 DIMENSIONS GAMEPLAY PS4 SERIES# It was a decent enough game but quite repetitive, a little too difficult for many and it had one of the most irritating soundtracks ever. The sequel, Geometry Wars 2, however improved on it massively with a host of extra modes that made it a true ten out of ten masterpiece. It remains one of the best arcade experiences of all time and is certainly the best game in the genre. So, it’s safe to say that I’m expecting A LOT from Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions.ĭimensions stays close to the formula.
